Should I pursue a career in acting?

I've been watching LOST and some other shows and movies I really like lately and they got me thinking and somewhat interested in becoming an actor. I've been reading biography's of people like Matthew Fox and it seems like all he did was move to NY, got some good advice, went to acting school and rolled with it. Does the field have a lot to do with fate and luck and how long does it take to make a good living off being an actor? I'm a pretty smart guy and I was wondering if its possible to major in a degree such as medicine or business and get a minor degree in acting/theatre? Whats the best way to approach this because if acting is too much of a long shot I don't know if I should go for it.
