Why do some trees have longer trunks than others?

I was curious about the reason, if there is one, why some trees have long trunks before the branches and leaves begin; like maples and others, like some pines start from the ground. may be in a forest the lower leaves don't get enough sun so no branches are required or large animals can't climb right up and break branches off. etc.etc Is there any known reason?
