Can someone please tell me about the whole Earthquake and Tsunami thingy?

I know the earthquake happens at Japan.. And Tsunami too? I don't get it... Why does it spreads? I'm living in Indonesia and my friend says that the Tsunami alert is here too, but not in Jakarta phew, but am still just worried. I don't really understand this whole thing -,-
